UEFA Fitness Advisory Group Member | Elite Sports Scientist
Chris Barnes is one of the pioneers of modern sports science in professional football, with over 30 years of experience working at the elite level across multiple sports, including football, rugby league, and basketball.
In 1996, he became the first full-time Sports Scientist in the English Premier League, where he played a groundbreaking role at Middlesbrough FC. His innovative work established the club as a leader in a discipline that was still emerging at the time. The performance model he developed has since been widely adopted, contributing to the integration of sports science as a core component of football operations both in the UK and globally.
Chris combines practical expertise with strong academic engagement. He is an active researcher, regularly publishing in peer-reviewed journals, and is a sought-after speaker at leading national and international conferences, where he shares insights on performance optimization, athlete monitoring, and innovation in elite sport.
Currently, Chris is a member of the UEFA Fitness Advisory Group, where he plays a key role in shaping the future of coach education. He is leading the rollout of the new UEFA Fitness Coaching Diplomas, contributing to the development of the next generation of performance professionals.
In addition, he has held advisory roles with leading global brands such as Catapult Sports, Nike, and Red Bull, supporting innovation in performance technology, data analytics, and athlete monitoring systems.
At Football Conference Baku, Chris Barnes will share his extensive experience on the evolution of sports science, the integration of technology in football performance, and the future of athlete development in an increasingly data-driven game.
