Aktuğ Sönmez graduated from the Coaching Department of Celal Bayar University and later obtained a Master's degree in Sports Management from Bahçeşehir University. Since September 2022, he has been serving as the Turkey Market Manager for Sport Republic, a UK-based sports investment company and one of the shareholders of Göztepe Sports Club. Between 2005 and 2009, Sönmez worked as a coach at Göztepe, and later returned to the club where he served as Sporting Coordinator and Board Member from 2016 to 2022. From 2010 to 2015, he worked at the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) Football Development Directorate.
He is currently a Board Member of the İzmir Sports Clubs Union Foundation (İZVAK). Sönmez has completed the FIFA-CIES Sports Management Program as well as the TFF Sporting Director Certification Program. He also holds TFF-TUTOR and UEFA A Coaching Licenses. During his time at the Turkish Football Federation, he participated in several international UEFA working groups focused on coaching education and football development.
